Dysplasia (coxae congenita), is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints. It is a genetic (polygenic) trait that is affected by environmental factors.

Polish Kennel Club requires the hipscore olny to be made in several breeds.  Althought every polish breeder should do the test. What could be interesting for foreigners is how the hipscore is  inscribed onto dog’s pedigree. Only few specialists in Poland are permitted to perform the test and report the results to PKC.

Here is an example, this is side “B” of pedigree, in upper left corner there are two stamps and results (both  ED and HD). Every examination has its id. number, the date, result and signature. If such stamp is not presented on pedigree it means according to regulations of PKC, that dog has no valid hip score or elbow score results.

The heritability of dysplasia according to polish experts

• both parents free (A or B) – 24 – 37.5 % puppies might have dysplasia (C or worse)
• one parent dysplastic (C or worse) – 44.7 a 50 % puppies might have dysplasia (dam has bigger impact than sire)
• both paretns dysplastic (C or worse) – między 84.1 a 93 % puppies might have dysplasia

If all grandparent are free form dysplasia, the probability that puppies will have dysplasia drops to 8,7 %

The age of dogs during the examination also matters, here are the results of accuracy of test depending on age:

• 12 months – 68.9 %
• 18 months – 82.7 %
• 24 months- 95.4 %
